Symptoms
Weevil damage shows up on the foliage in crescent “C” shaped feeding patterns. After hatching, weevils are legless grubs that feed on the roots of the plant.
What Will Happen To My Landscape?
While the adult weevils feed on foliage, often resulting in an unsightly appearance, the more serious damage is done by grubs (larval stage), which feed on the roots and may girdle the main stem, often killing the plant. Weevil grub feeding has been known to take out an entire plant even before seeing the damage on the leaves. Adult feeding will leave the landscape unappealing and susceptible to other problems.
What Can I Do About Weevils?
Chemical control may be your only option to control weevils. Most local hardware stores carry insecticides that will control weevils. Because these sprays can cause injury to certain plants, read the label thoroughly before using and apply according to the directions. Depending on the severity of the damage, more than one insecticide application may be required for complete control. Combating weevils can be a timely and unpleasant weekend task!
